How to Book a 4WD Camper

Understand Your Vehicle

Before going on your trip, we recommend that you take time to familiarise yourself with your 4WD camper and learn to adjust the tyre pressure for sand driving or navigating rough terrain. Our team will give you a full briefing to guide you before hitting the road.

Pack Smart

Being well-prepared is essential for traveling long distances, especially to remote areas. Keep a first aid kit, non-perishable food, plenty of water, extra fuel if possible, and basic survivor tools with you.

Check Road Conditions

The weather is unpredictable and many outback tracks can be affected by it leading to sudden road closures. It’s important to always check the conditions before heading out and plan alternative routes.

Communication & Safety

Mobile coverage can become limited in remote areas so we do recommend having a satellite phone or UHF radio in case of an emergency. Satellite phones can be hired up to 7 days before pick-up. Contact our team to get this organised.

Respect the Environment

Try to stay on your designated tracks and minimise your waste. Going on an adventure can be exciting, but don’t get too carried away, make sure to respect Indigenous sites and follow local guidelines.

FAQs

What is the minimum rental period for a 4WD camper in Alice Springs?

Usually, the minimum rental duration is between five and seven days, particularly during the busiest travel seasons. Depending on demand and availability, there can be some shorter rental choices. A longer hire guarantees you have ample time to take in the breath-taking scenery by allowing you to explore the Outback at your own pace. We also provide adjustable rental periods to accommodate your schedule if you intend to take a longer trip.

Can I drive a 4WD camper anywhere in the Northern Territory?

Although our 4WD campers for hire are built to withstand rough roads and off-road terrain, there are some limitations for safety and vehicle protection. Permission from the branch may be needed for remote locations like the Simpson Desert or some unpaved roads. Refer to your rental agreement available on our website for the full list of 4WD Travel Restrictions.

Is camping gear included in the rental?

Of course! Everything you need is included in your camper, such as a portable gas stove, cooking utensils, basic outdoor furniture, and a rooftop tent or interior sleeping arrangement. For a comfortable Outback experience, we make sure you have everything you need. All you need to bring is your sense of adventure!

Are one-way rentals available from Alice Springs?

Yes! We offer one-way rentals to popular destinations like Darwin, Adelaide, and Perth, giving you the freedom to explore without having to loop back. We also offer 4WD camper hires in Darwin if you wish to start your journey there. One-way hires are a great way to experience more of Australia’s incredible landscapes while making the most of your travel time. Availability can be limited, so we recommend booking early if you're planning a one-way trip. You can contact our support team if you have any questions about your route and we’ll be happy to assist in planning the best itinerary for you.

We’ve got you covered with 24/7 roadside assistance. If anything goes wrong, just give call the roadside assist number, and help will be arrange as quickly as possible. For remote travel, we always recommend hiring a satellite phone, carrying extra water, food, and fuel, just in case. Our team will also give you a full briefing before you set off, so you know what to do in an emergency. Safety is our top priority, and we’ll make sure you feel confident before you hit the road.

Do I need a special license to hire a 4WD camper in Alice Springs?

No special license is needed, just a full, valid driver’s license. If your license is not in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) or accredited English translation is required. Driving a 4WD is a little different from a regular car, but team members at the branch will walk you through everything you need to know before you set off. If you’re new to off-road driving, we can provide tips and advice to ensure you’re comfortable behind the wheel.

Can I travel through the Simpson Desert with my rental camper?

The Simpson Desert is one of Australia’s most extreme off-road destinations, and not all rentals are approved for travel there. A few tracks such as the Ghan Heritage Trail are prohibited at all times. Full information can be found in the rental agreement on our website. Check with our team members if you are unsure.

What are the fuel policies for 4WD camper hire?

The majority of rentals follow a full-to-full fuel policy, which means that you will be given a camper with a full tank and will have to return it in the same condition. Given the vast distances in the Outback, we strongly advise refuelling whenever you get the chance because roadhouses can be few and far between! Having additional fuel on hand is crucial if you're traveling to more remote areas. We'll give you advice on where to stop for gas and what to anticipate while traveling.

Do I need to book campsites in advance?

It depends on where you’re going. Booking in advance is advised because popular camping areas close to Uluru, Glen Helen, Kings Canyon, and the West MacDonnell Ranges can fill up rapidly, particularly during peak season. There are also plenty of free or low-cost camping areas throughout the Outback. If you’re planning an impromptu adventure, we can suggest some great campgrounds that don’t require any reservations.

Is there a mileage limit on 4WD rentals?

Our 4WD Campers in Alice Springs come with a 300km limit per day, calculated as a sum at the end of your rental. There are options to purchase additional kilometre packs or get an Unlimited Km Cover before you start your journey.
